Trekking, Kayaking, Camping & Offbeat Kerala

Kerala Adventure

Kerala is often introduced through its houseboats, beaches, tea plantations and Ayurvedic traditions.

But spend a little more time here and another Kerala begins to appear — the Kerala of early-morning mist on a mountain road, a narrow canoe slipping through a village canal, a tea worker walking through a plantation, a sudden waterfall after the monsoon, or a small village road that is far more interesting than the highway beside it.

At Kerala Travel Exotica, we don't see adventure as simply ticking off activities from a list. For us, a good adventure holiday is about getting outside, moving at a comfortable pace and seeing a side of Kerala that you might otherwise drive past. Sometimes that means kayaking at sunrise. Sometimes it means walking through a mountain village, camping beside the forest, or simply taking the longer road.

What Does Adventure Mean in Kerala?

Adventure in Kerala doesn't always have to be extreme. You don't need to be an experienced trekker or an adrenaline seeker to enjoy an adventure holiday here — Kerala allows you to choose your own level.

You could spend a morning kayaking through the backwaters, walk through a village in the afternoon and finish the day at a comfortable boutique hotel. Or you could spend several days trekking, camping, rafting and exploring the Western Ghats. Between those two extremes is an enormous range of experiences.

Kerala's relationship with water is one of its greatest strengths — backwaters, rivers, canals, lagoons, mangroves and coastal waterways. Kayaking is particularly special because it takes you away from the main tourist routes and into places where everyday life continues around the water: fishermen checking their nets, small boats carrying people home, children returning from school. That is a very different experience from simply looking at the backwaters from a large boat.

Kayaking in Kerala

For many travellers, kayaking becomes one of the unexpected highlights of their Kerala holiday. The experience changes from region to region.

Around Kadamakkudy, the waterways wind between islands, paddy fields, mangroves and fishing landscapes close to Kochi. Around Kumbalangi, the atmosphere is more village-oriented, with traditional occupations and narrow waterways. Further south, the backwaters around Alleppey and Kumarakom open into a larger network of canals, lagoons and village waterways.

And then there is the simple pleasure of being on the water early in the morning — the light soft, the villages still waking up, the water usually quiet. For a couple of hours, Kerala feels wonderfully unhurried. Start with our Kadamakkudy Kayaking Tour or our nearby Kumbalangi night kayaking experience.

The Western Ghats: Kerala's Adventure Playground

If the backwaters are Kerala's water world, the Western Ghats are its mountain world — this is where the character of an adventure holiday changes completely. The roads climb through tea plantations and forests, villages become smaller, temperatures fall, streams appear beside the road, and plantation landscapes give way to forests, grasslands and mountain valleys.

Regions around Munnar, Mankulam, Marayur, Kanthalloor, Vattavada, Idukki, Vagamon and Thattekkad offer very different experiences. We encourage travellers not to concentrate only on famous viewpoints — a good mountain day might involve a short trek, a local lunch, a plantation walk, a waterfall, a jeep ride along a remote road and time simply sitting somewhere with a view. You don't necessarily need to climb the highest mountain to have an adventure. See our Munnar Highlands Adventure and Munnar Ultimate Adventure.

Trekking in Kerala

Kerala offers everything from gentle nature walks to demanding mountain trails, and the important thing is choosing the right walk. A two-hour forest walk can sometimes be more enjoyable than a difficult full-day trek if your holiday is otherwise busy - likewise, experienced trekkers may want something considerably more demanding.

We prefer to match trekking experiences to fitness level, age and experience, season, weather, trail conditions, local permissions, time available and the rest of the itinerary. The mountains should be enjoyed, not conquered.

Camping in Kerala

There is something wonderfully simple about camping in Kerala. After a day of travelling through the mountains, the landscape becomes quiet - a meal, perhaps a bonfire where appropriate, a conversation that continues longer than expected, and a sky that feels very different from the one in the city.

Camping can be combined with trekking, jeep excursions, sunrise walks, river experiences, waterfalls, wildlife and birdwatching, village experiences and local food. For younger groups and students, camping can become the centre of the trip - see our Munnar Student Camping & Adventure Tour. For couples and families, it can instead be a carefully selected one-night experience within a more comfortable holiday - our Vattavada Camping Adventure is built around exactly that.

Rafting & River Adventures

Kerala's rivers offer another side of the state. White-water rafting is a very different experience from kayaking in the backwaters — faster, more physical and dependent on river conditions.

River adventures don't have to stop at rafting: depending on the destination, an outdoor itinerary may include river walks, waterfall visits, natural pools, forest trails, riverside camping and kayaking alongside rafting. River activities are particularly seasonal, so we always recommend checking current conditions rather than assuming an activity will operate exactly the same way throughout the year.

Cycling Through the Kerala You Don't See From a Car

One of the easiest ways to slow down in Kerala is to get on a bicycle. A short ride through a village can reveal far more than another hour spent inside a vehicle — the smell of a bakery, a small temple beside the road, fishing nets drying in the sun, a toddy shop opening for the day, paddy fields, canals, children waving as you pass, an old house you would never have noticed from a car.

Cycling works particularly well around Kochi, Kumbalangi, Kadamakkudy, Alleppey and selected rural and plantation regions. For travellers who prefer not to work too hard, e-bikes can make these experiences considerably easier. Try our Kuttanad Guided Cycle Tour.

Wildlife & Nature: Adventure Without Adrenaline

Not every traveller wants rafting or difficult trekking. For many people, the greatest adventure is being somewhere wild and quiet.

Kerala's forests and wetlands support an extraordinary variety of birds, mammals, reptiles and plant life. Thattekkad, for example, is particularly interesting for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Other mountain and forest regions can be combined with guided walks, wildlife experiences, plantation visits and camping. For photographers, these journeys can be especially rewarding because Kerala's landscape changes dramatically between dawn, midday rain and evening light.

Waterfalls & Monsoon Kerala

Kerala's monsoon changes the personality of the landscape. Streams become fuller, waterfalls become louder, the hills turn intensely green and clouds settle over the Western Ghats. For travellers who enjoy landscapes and nature, this can be one of the most beautiful times to see Kerala.

But monsoon adventure requires common sense. A trail that is perfectly comfortable in January may not be appropriate during heavy rain - waterfalls, rivers, trekking routes and rafting operations can change according to conditions. Adventure should never mean ignoring nature's warnings; we prefer to adapt the itinerary when conditions require it. Our Athirappilly Rainforest Adventure and Kuttampuzha Rainforest Adventure are both built around this landscape.

The Offbeat Side of Kerala

One of the questions we hear most often is: “Where can we go in Kerala that is not too touristy?”

There is no single secret destination. Instead, it is often about how you travel - a popular destination can still offer an unusual experience if you leave the main sightseeing circuit, and a relatively unknown place can feel disappointing if you simply arrive, take a photograph and leave.

Some of the regions we particularly enjoy for slower adventure travel:

  • Kadamakkudy – a collection of islands and waterways surprisingly close to Kochi (full guide)
  • Kumbalangi – fishing villages, backwaters and a glimpse into coastal village life
  • Mankulam – forest, rivers, waterfalls, plantations and mountain roads
  • Marayur – a distinctive high-range landscape with villages, farms and sandalwood country
  • Kanthalloor – mountain farming, orchards, valleys and a quieter highland atmosphere
  • Vattavada – remote mountain landscapes and agricultural communities near Kerala's high ranges
  • Thattekkad – forest, birds, rivers and nature experiences
  • Northern Kerala – an often-overlooked combination of rivers, forests, beaches, culture and outdoor experiences

These places are not presented as “secret spots” — they are living landscapes, and that distinction matters. Explore our Kadamakkudy Island Village Adventure, Kochi & Kumbalangi Adventure Escape and Wayanad & North Kerala Adventure.

Adventure with Local Life

We believe some of Kerala's best experiences are not activities at all — they happen between the activities. A cup of tea at a small roadside shop. A conversation with a fisherman. Watching someone make a traditional meal. Walking through a farming village. Stopping beside a paddy field. Listening to stories about a place from someone who actually lives there.

These small moments are difficult to put into a package brochure. But they are often what travellers remember.

Is Kerala Adventure Suitable for Families?

Absolutely. Adventure does not have to mean difficult. A family may enjoy easy kayaking, village walks, nature trails, wildlife experiences, cycling, waterfalls, plantation visits, short mountain walks, safe boating and a carefully selected camping night.

The right programme depends on the children's ages and the family's comfort level. A good family adventure should leave everyone excited for the next day — not exhausted by it.

Kerala Adventure Holidays for Couples

Couples often don't want an itinerary packed with activities from morning to night. A better combination can be one memorable adventure, one beautiful place and plenty of unplanned time.

A sunrise kayaking experience can be followed by breakfast and a slow afternoon. A mountain trek can be combined with a boutique stay. A camping night can be followed by a comfortable resort. Adventure and comfort don't have to be opposites - our private Kadamakkudy kayaking, SUP & village day tour is a good example.

Kerala Adventure Tours for Students & Young Groups

Kerala works particularly well for student groups because adventure can be connected to learning. A trip can include trekking, camping, kayaking, rafting, ecology, birdwatching, village studies, agriculture, traditional architecture, local food, team activities and environmental awareness.

Instead of simply visiting places, students can experience the geography, ecology and communities that make those places what they are. See our full range of Kerala study & educational tours.

When Is the Best Time for a Kerala Adventure Holiday?

There is no single “best month” for every activity.

October to February

Generally excellent for outdoor travel, with comfortable conditions for many trekking, kayaking, cycling and mountain experiences.

March to May

The higher elevations become particularly attractive as the lowlands become warmer. Early morning and evening activities can be more comfortable.

June to September

The southwest monsoon brings dramatic greenery and powerful waterfalls. It can be a beautiful season for nature-focused travel, but outdoor activities become more dependent on daily weather and local safety conditions.

For adventure travel, the best itinerary is often the one that respects the season rather than fighting it.

How Many Days Do You Need?

  • 2–3 Days – ideal for a short adventure around Kochi, Kadamakkudy, Kumbalangi or the nearby backwaters
  • 4–5 Days – enough to combine coastal or backwater experiences with a mountain destination
  • 6–7 Days – a good length for a more balanced adventure involving mountains, nature, water and local experiences
  • 8–10 Days – better for travellers who want to move slowly and explore several different landscapes
  • 10 Days or More – ideal for a deeper Kerala journey combining the coast, backwaters, Western Ghats, wildlife and lesser-known regions

Can Adventure Be Combined with a Luxury Kerala Holiday?

Yes — and we actually recommend it for many travellers. You don't have to choose between sleeping in a tent and staying in a beautiful heritage or boutique property.

A well-designed itinerary can alternate between adventure, a comfortable stay, a local experience, a boutique property, mountain exploration and relaxation. A morning kayak can be followed by a beautiful hotel. A day of trekking can be followed by a quiet plantation retreat. A camping night can be followed by a comfortable resort. The adventure becomes part of the holiday rather than the entire holiday - see our Marayoor, Thekkady & Kumarakom luxury tour and Luxury Kerala Backwater & Munnar Tour for exactly this balance.

How We Plan a Kerala Adventure Holiday

There is no universal Kerala adventure itinerary. Before suggesting a route, we consider:

  • Who is travelling? A couple, family, student group and experienced trekker will need completely different programmes
  • How active do you want to be? Easy, moderate or challenging
  • What season are you travelling? Kerala's weather can completely change which experiences make sense
  • How much time do you have? We would rather recommend three good experiences than six rushed ones
  • Where are you arriving and leaving? Good routing can save hours of unnecessary driving
  • What do you actually enjoy? Some travellers love water, others prefer forests, some want mountains, others want village life and photography

A More Responsible Way to Experience Kerala

Adventure takes place in landscapes that are often environmentally sensitive. Forests, mangroves, rivers, wetlands and mountain communities are not amusement parks.

We encourage travellers to follow local guides and regulations, avoid littering, respect wildlife, avoid disturbing birds and animals, respect village life and private property, use established trails where required, follow weather and safety instructions, and support genuine local businesses where possible. The goal is not simply to visit beautiful places - it is to leave them beautiful.

Start with the Experience, Not the Package

Perhaps the easiest way to plan an adventure holiday in Kerala is not to start with a package name. Start with a question: what do you want to feel during this holiday?

If you want to be on the water, we can build around kayaking and the backwaters. If you want mountains, we can take you into the Western Ghats. If you want adrenaline, we can look at rafting, trekking and outdoor activities. If you want nature, we can build around forests, wildlife and birdwatching. If you want something different, we can explore Kerala's villages, islands and lesser-known landscapes. And if you want a little of everything, we can build a journey that changes character as you travel.

Plan Your Kerala Adventure with People Who Know Kerala

Kerala Travel Exotica was established in 2010, with a focus on creating private, consultation-led Kerala holidays rather than simply selling standard itineraries. We believe the best Kerala journeys are not necessarily the ones with the longest list of places - they are the ones where the route makes sense, the pace feels right and there is enough space to actually experience the destination.

Tell us your travel dates, number of travellers, arrival and departure points, preferred activities, fitness/activity level, accommodation preference and approximate budget, and we'll help you build a Kerala adventure around the way you want to travel.
